Black Jack and the rest of his species (the Swainson's hawk) love to eat grasshoppers in the winter after they reach their migration destination, Argentina.

During the summer Black Jack likes to help out the wildlife biologists by playing the role of 'foster dad' in his free time. This picture is of two of the nestling Swainson's hawks that Black Jack fostered this summer. They were released in early September in time for them to migrate south to Argentina (a long flight south that is 10,000 kmĀ one way). This species, whose scientific name is, Buteo swainsoni, has the second longest migration of all birds.
