AIWC KID'S ANSWER PAGE - Question 2

WHAT AM I????

Bats are not the feared species that people make them out to be. With little factual knowledge you can quickly learn that bats are extremely beneficial to our environment and should not be judged on the myths, legends, and superstition that follow them.

Myth: Bats are blind.

Fact: Bats eyesite is just fine.

Myth: All bats carry rabies and diseases.

Fact: Not all bats carry diseases. Bats seldom transmit disease

to other animals or humans, but bats are wild animals and should not

be disturbed, in case they are carrying certain diseases.

Myth: All bats drink blood.

Fact: There are not vampire bat species in Canada. In general most bats feed on

insects and fruits, with the exeption of three tropical bat species (who do feed on

blood). But what is really exciting is that scientists are working on using the

anticoagulant found in the saliva of the vampire bat to treat heart patients.

So what is the difference between a big brown bat and a little brown bat?

That's right!

A big brown bat is slightly larger than a little brown bat by both wingspan and body mass. As for habitat, these two species are different because the little brown bat is more likely to live close to water, while the big brown bat has a

more varied habitat from forests to farmlands. And one more interesting

differnce is that the big brown bat is less likely to eat moths (which is a

favorite of the little brown bat).
